Ever listened to an album by an acclaimed band/artist for the first time only to be completely underwhelmed by the whole experience?
A mate of mine used to slag Kreator off constantly because of the album he heard first - Renewal. After years of badgering, he finally relented and listened to a copy of Pleasure to Kill I'd done for him and totally retracted everything he said about them (he still hates Renewal, mind).
Myself, when I was about 14, I was told how brilliant Alice Cooper was, but, because it was cheap, I bought Freak Out Song (not even an official Alice album) instead of the more expensive (I was still at school) School's Out or Welcome to my Nightmare and never listened to him again for about 3 years, until he released Raise Your Fist and Yell.
Conversely, I got into Motorhead via their universally lambasted "Another Perfect Day" album. Totally love that album to this day but it definitely seems I'm in the minority.
So, for those of you who didn't get bored getting this far, what band did you (nearly) miss out on because of an unfortunate album choice and/or what strange album choice got you into a band?
Yes, I'm bored.

The most obvious would be St Anger... Complete Mental.
Another choice would be Dream Theater - I got images and words a few months ago, and thought it was complete toss. I haven't been able to see past that for a while.

Guns N Roses - The Spaghetti Incident

Oooffffhhhh! That's a kick in the bollocks!
What a shite album that was!
One of the first albums I got was Anthrax's Attack of the Killer B's album. But even though it wasn't a proper album, it was awesome as fuck, so that doesn't apply to this thread............ YEAH FUCKING WHOOOOOOOOO, METAL!

Another Perfect Day is a great album. As i tend to dl first rather than buy, i don't usually have this problem.
Gee.... I don't know about the rest of you guys, but lately the only things that truly motivate me are erections and bowel movements.
Thank the Police coming straight from the underground...

hmm...well the only one that springs to mind really is Megadeth. I liked them when I was a kid and then went years without listening to them. I heard Crush 'Em on that MTV rock show some 6 or 7 years later and thought how the hell did I ever like this band? Then I heard Rust In Peace and it got me back into them.
Oh yes, and Slayer. First album I bought by them was Undisputed Attitude. picked it up for a fiver, should have shelled out a bit more for Reign in blood or south of heaven

Obsessed By Cruelty??
if you have the CD version, then it's not even the same recording as the original LP release, it's quite a lot shitter in fact!
hmm i can't say I've ever bought an album and been really disappointed!!!
try before you buy is a good idea i reckon

Obviously, nowadays it's a lot easier - ridiculously easy in fact - to do just that, but when I first started buying albums (way back in the early 80's) it was a lot more difficult. If you bought an album and didn't like it, it was a lot more difficult to swap them. Some shops (WH Smiths for example) used to be right little bastards about it.

Yea it's a lot easier to do that now because of the internet. Also some of the metal specialist shops like Hellraiser will let you listen to the CD in the shop before you buy it, and even in Virgin they have the listening posts which can be quite good if you're buying stuff you've not heard before.

I remember I bought "Killing Is My Business" when it came out ('cos of Mustaine's Metallica roots) and hated it. I thought the production was abysmal. I didn't buy "Peace Sells" until I'd seen a load of reviews raving about it and I was fairly sure it would be an improvement.

how can you not like KIMB? It's a drug and metallica-hatred fuelled masterpiece!
