Well, last night I got my second new bass in a year: a very very limited edition Akai Nineteen Ninety-Seven. Previously owned by Neil Murray (ex-Whitesnake, Sabbath, Brian May, Michael Schenker), it was given to him on his 1997 tour of Japan with the Brian May Band.
As far as I know, only a handful of these made it outside of Japan, and I can't find any information on them. The pickups have been changed to Lace Alumitone Bass Bars, and it sounds and plays like an absolute beast. Circuitry looks to have been completely re-done, though I can't find anything on the bass online so I can't even find photos of the stock control cavity.
Controls (clockwise from top): Volume, Bass, Treble, active/passive switch, neck/bridge Pickup Blend
Needless to say, I'm pleased as hell with it

Re: My New Bass!!
For those who want to know, this is what it sounds like:
The music is one of my old Grade 5 bass pieces, it's one of the only things I've got a backing track for. The clip's been mixed and bounced down in Logic Express 8, post-processing consists of a slight EQ change, compressor, limiter, stereo spreader and a very light chorus.
