If Death Metal is making a come back, I can't say that I'm that bothered: too much faster and more gore obsessed than thou for me, Death Metal was best first time round. Name your favourite lesser known 90s bands.

Yeah, all the bands in the latest Terrorizer "UKDM" feature are a disgrace. I was thinking about this while doing a poo actually - "death metal" should sound like horrible decay and the tormented cries of abyss-beasts. It's about darkness from the void, not tattooed short-hairs trying to be macho, or pathetic pig-noises squealing about gore. RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE!

My next objective is to really delve deeper into proper death metal, as I've spent the last few months on a trad/doom trip. I need more sounds like early Tiamat, Asphyx, Autopsy, etc. I will report back when I am more versed in the filthy lore of death metal.

By the way, just to kick things off everyone should get DROWNED's release 'Viscera Terrae' - it's fucking incredible. I know it's not an early-90s release, but it easily could have been.

Yeah, I can't say any of the new bands do much for me. Although instead of the countless identical hardcore or general wank fringe metal bands, we finally have a death metal band in my little town! And they're pretty awesome too.
As for lesser known death metal albums - I can't bring anything to the table. I only know the well known shit.

In my opinion the Finnish scene in the 90s was full of great and overlooked bands - Funebre, Demigod, Abhorrence (pre-Amorphis), Mordicus, Purtenance and Convulse to name but a few.

Other albums that deserved more attention than they got I'd say would be:
Rottrevore - Iniquitous
God Dethroned - The Christhunt
Desultory - Into Eternity

i like Entombed and Death Breath, also there an compilation thats just come out called swedish Death metal that's got some exellent old school death metal on and is well worth a listen.

Goreaphobia, maze of torment, incantation, crucifier, malevolent creation, desolate, decameron, belphagor, acrostichon (great female vocals), toxaemia, disgrace and many more i remember enjoying back in the 90s!!

Baphomet (ones who turned into Banished) are a stormer. And on the vinyl it said a guy called Tom (Impaler) did the artwork. So i obviously hunted down Impaler who are also brilliant.

Another band i stumbled across once, Depravity. Their biggest release is an EP called Silence of the Centuries, and it has one of those album covers that reflects perfectly with the music.

As for new death metal being shit, its pretty much true. My 'new' favourite death metal bands would be of the likes of Bloodbath, Cannabis Corpse and Warrington's Neandertahl (this is a must see, honestly). Hopefully i can post my tastes with less desasterous results this time.

Desultory are worth checking out. At least the EP and first album, anyway.
Also Morgoth, Autopsy, Incubus (who became Opprobrium), Cancer, Master, Carnage, Resurrection, Impetigo, Grave and Hellwitch. Some better known than others.
You have, of course, already checked out bands like Unleashed and Massacre, right ?

SENTENCED - Shadows of the Past (1991)

I bought this recently, and it is utterly, utterly killer. GAAAAAAH! So dark, morbidly melodic, pummeling percussion, demonic vocals, superb guitar leads, crushing yet varied songwriting. Lovely production too. Sentenced may well be a bunch of gays these days, but buy this album RIGHT NOW.

Did you get the recent 2 disc reissue? It's a superb package. I actually prefer the second album 'North From Here', but that one's a bit more progressive and technical. What I think was always great with Sentenced was the lead guitar; the solos are really interesting and memorable on Shadows...
