Anvil Chorus (Doug Piercey's pre-Heathen band)

Postby blacktears on Thu Mar 05, 2009 7:43 pm

Before he started Heathen in 1985, Doug Piercey was playing in this seminal San Francisco Metal band. After their blasting "Blondes in Black" single in 1982, they veered off into more progressive Metal territory, leaving more conventional structures behind.

For years Monster Records was trying to get their archive material out on CD, to no avail. Now the band has reformed and re-recorded their old demo tracks from the early 80s.

You can hear two newly recorded versions on their My Space site -"Phase to Phase" & "Death of a Dream". I have the original demo versions of these from 1983, and these re-recordings do those old classics justice.

The album should be out in the summer, on Rockadrome Records (ex-Monster Records).

I can't honestly remember who was in IN4I now, I'd have to dig the CD out. A ex-member of Exodus does ring a bell though. It was one of Jon Torres's many bands - Ulysses Siren, Warning SF and he was also in Heathen, Slough Feg & Angel Witch.

I have been for a drink with Jon quite a few times - great guy.

I just been upstairs and fetched it now. The line up was
Jon torres (warning SF, Ulysses siren, laaz rocket, angel witch pleasure and pain, repulsa & slough feg)
Bobby Gustafson (overkill, cycle sluts from hell & screw)
Brian Poole (warning SF, pleasure and pain, repulsa)
Tom hunting (exodus, angel witch, repulsa, pleasure and pain, wardance)

Tom does the vocals too!!!

To be honest, it doesnt really add up to the sum of its parts, and as this was never released in the end, i reckon this promo pack must be pretty rare!!

I am sure that CD was released on Crook'd Records, as I had some copies over to sell. Jon wanted to hand me a huge pile, to sell at gigs, when he was over visiting Kevin Heybourne. However, I thought I would have a hard job flogging masses, so only took a few off him.

The 1994 demo was recorded as a 3 piece - Tom Hunting (drums/vocals) Jon Torres (guitar) Brian Poole (bass)

The 1995 demo saw Brian Poole replaced with John Wayne Torgussen on bass, and the addition of Bobby Gustafson on guitar/vocals.

You're right though, the material is not super hot Thrash, as you would expect from the members involved. A little bit "middle of the road" really.

I am interested to hear about this band KAOS that Jon's wife's label (Relentless Records) are currently promoting. Formed in 1988.

KAOS

Jason Darnell - Vocals
Stacey Murray - Guitar
Keven Albert - Guitar
Jay Figueroa - Bass
Burton P. Ortega - Drums

You are about to experience a Kaos not known to man. Kaos has developed a form of metal all their own. Their songs contain a brutal thrashing style, mixed with pure Bay Area power. They have created their own identity through their sound and certain way of playing metal. The music delivery has a heavy attack, an extremely aggressive vocal style, with a punishing guitar sound, crushing bass and superior drumming.
