Hardcore - Recommendations

Postby STD_Caps on Tue Apr 20, 2010 4:39 pm

Might be worth doing a chain of threads in this style but I thought as we are not all strict thrash-heads, a place to put our recommendations might be nice. So I guess the plan is not to put the mega-obvious but something that you want to draw people's attention to. So, for example, I would like to nominate, on the hardcore theme:

Nails - Guys from Carry On and Terror. Now, I'm not big on either of the aforementioned bands - they're a bit to numbskullian for me - but this band really impressed me. Their label site describes them as 'Entombed covering Napalm Death and Drop Dead'. I'll go with that.

(sorry about the extended silence at the end. can't seem to find another without.)

Behind Enemy Lines - Political and old-school. In fact, they include Aus Rotten and Caustic Christ people in their ranks. A nice mix of punk, thrash and straight hardcore (I can hear SOIA-isms to some extent). Great message, great music.

Less obscurely, I'd obviously throw Hang the Bastard in for those not in the UK know and also mention that it's pretty much SOIA new album time. What's more Victim in Pain (Agnostic Front) has just been 'deluxe editioned', so good times. Just throw in this little metal/emocore classic on the end here. I will imagine this will get a few 'fuck offs' but I became addicted to this album when it first came out:

Almost as embarassing as this new recent find. This would normally be way too poppy for my taste but some of the songs on this album are belters (though, The Approaching Curve is one of the worst atrocities to music):

And as a little bit of redemption. This band are farily well-known but I was amazed with the quality of the tracks on this album. If you haven't checked it out but have been intrigued, see if this doesn't sway you:

"And what about the churches and all their wealth
There's an unseen fortune under their belts
Are golden temples a symbol of God's way
This horde of wealth is a sickening display"

I was more of a fan of Boy Set Fire - Tomorrow Come Today myself good post-hardcore there.

Hardcore is a iffy little thing.

I was a huge fan of Blood for Blood back in the day

100% pure angst I was a angry teen believe it or not.

Basically cant go wrong with Cro-mags and Earth Crisis.

Loving the first one, everything else is a bit meh. SERIOUSLY loving the first one though, it really does sound like Entombed but even crustier.

Crumbsuckers - they're all you need ... saw them supporting Onslaught and Slammer the only time they came over to the UK, but by that time their singer had just left and it was the beginning of the end ...

Yeah, I heard a Nails track after hearing them mentioned on a punk page, checked 'em out and did think 'fuck, it's like a hardcore Entombed'. Really liking them. Really like the Doomriders' stuff as well. Someone described as Sick of it All mixed with Danzig and I thought that was pretty on the mark. Great band.

Love what I've heard from Blood for Blood. Originally, I heard a track on a Victory sampler - 'Mother Dear' and from there I was well impressed. I also quite liked some of the Ramallah stuff - the more Metallic side-project. Some of it was a bit too 'of that genre' but some of it was pretty nice. This was the best copy of this song I could get:

Beast on My Back I don't know too well. I am going to start listening to it over the next couple of days as I found it on a CD Jamie made for me. Some of the guys in Crumbsuckers went on to make Pro-Pain but I don't know them well enough to comment. Would sort of just put Crumbsuckers as crossover and be done with it.

The Nerve Agents released a great album in 2000, same year as The Art of Drowning, Days of the White Owl. Quite old-school and it has Havok on a track back in the days when he knew what hardcore was:

"And what about the churches and all their wealth
There's an unseen fortune under their belts
Are golden temples a symbol of God's way
This horde of wealth is a sickening display"

Check out 'Trap Them'. Really energetic hardcord with an Entombed sound.

Agreed. Trap Them do sound awesome. Will have to pick up their stuff.

Another band that have just released something that is all Entombed-y is Black Breath. I think Trap Them might do this better but this is still pretty fucking wicked.

I would agree with all the above bands but a lot of these are crossover or even thrash. Wargasm to me are definite thrash and Leeway, AF and Cro-Mags all, more or less, released thrash albums. But, yeah, wicked bands.

Face the Rail are really cool. Proper old-school and punky. The classic bands get too frequently ignored - Bad Brains, Minor Threat, Black Flag, Raw Power, Discharge, MDC, DRI (I mean their hardcore era) etc etc - but anything that's not classic pretty much gets completely blanked outside proper hardcore people. Sick of it All (one of my fave's at the mo), Integrity, Judge, Gorilla Biscuits, (early) AFI, Poison Idea and others from the 2nd generation of hardcore and a lot of the bands on this thread seemed to completely miss the radar with non-hc people.

Here's another great new(ish) hardcore band, Paint it Black. This is not one of their stronger songs but it's still pretty full-on. Their first album, CVA, was brilliant:

Song's a minute long.

The vocals let the other two Entombed-y bands down a bit for me, I suppose it's cos I'm listening to them with Entombed in mind instead of hardcore. Still, not bad stuff.

Boysetsfire are excellent. Also, why pick any Rise Against song post-Siren Songs? God they're garbage now.

Is all Boysetsfire excellent? I really did not like Tommorow Come Today. I thought it was a bit dull and lacked the real hardcore edge of 'After the Eulogy'. Never checked out The Misery Index but I've heard it was a return to form.

I recently bought The Sufferer and the Witness because it was going cheap. I find it really quite addictive, despite myself. Want to check out their earlier stuff too.

I'm buying the new SOIA album tonight and will be expanding my HC collection a little. Probably go with Trap Them too.

The guy from Trap Them other band Backstabbers Incorporated are definitely worth checking out too. If you're into the fast stuff XbraniacsX are worth checking out too. 625 Thrash released a collection of their EPs, Demos etc so you know it's gunna be good.

Defeatist - Sixth Extinction is fucking fantastic, one of the better grind records to come out recently.
