I'm just wondering why the musicians on this forums play metal at all? Why not play rock, pop, jazz or dance or anything else?

As a listener metal speaks to me (yeah I know this is totally gay but bare with me). I love listening to metal. I love the aggression, the 'fuck youness', the gore, the brutality, the speed, the pompousness and all that. To be honest, all of that is in Wagner but metal just carries something more with it. I wonder why, given the hardships bands face, why musicians like yourselves play metal to people like me when their talents could take them somewhere else? Maybe somewhere more lucrative.

Is metal truly an expressive art form or is it just an outlet for a bunch of retarded idiots?

It's clearly an expression of inner feelings, i for one love playing metal there is just something about the music that speaks to me.

That being said i'd likely be just as happy being in a ska band acting a total pratt all the time.

I personally don't really bother playing other styles of music. I play metal because it's fun to play, and aggressive as fuck at the same time. I sometimes play some nice clean-tone chilled out things, but the majority of the time it's metal. I don't really have any interest in learning other styles of music, it's just not as fun!

I find playing Offspring much better.

If I play a Metal song, it'll be because there's some cool riffs in it, e.g. Bark At the Moon, Don't Talk To Strangers.

I play metal coz I forgot to learn other stuff and got stuck in the 80's, everything else seems boring on bass in comparison though.

Yeah, especially jazz and funk.
