Prog is amazing, but this band in this here thread isn't a great example of it, in my opinion. They're not as good as Dream Theater, and I don't even like Dream Theater, so therefore to my mind they're pretty rubbish, even though they're technically proficient. I want soul in my music, hence why Diagonal are one of the best new bands to emerge from the depths of hades.

Gee.... I don't know about the rest of you guys, but lately the only things that truly motivate me are erections and bowel movements.

Thank the Police coming straight from the underground...

I don't mind Rush, to be honest; they just bore the arse off of me. Alex Lifeson's guitar playing irritates me too.

You seriously need to get a fucking grip.

Yeah like Jon said the lack of soul is what it's all about for me. I don't care how good a band is on their instruments if their music has zero emotional appeal. I am sure there are lovely things to uncover in the prog genre, but it seems more than any other metal genre to be overwhelmed with soulless acts (along with 99% of brutal death metal), and this really turns me off.

Seriously, how can you like such musical turds?

Personally, I even struggle to get enjoyment out of bands like Atheist (although I certainly wouldn't say they lack the 'soul' factor), even though I have tried many times.

I've never listened to Atheist properly really.

Dream Theater are just the best band in the world. I don't see how people can't see that.

Ben I wasn't denying there are prog bands out there who have some spark to them, my point was that the genre is so saturated with emotionless wankery that I can't be ringed with it. Dream Theater are lame; Rush are really cool but I've neglected their catalogue; I really like Genesis. Linear Sphere type prog is worthless though in my opinion.

Dream Theatre's best songs - Another Day, The Silent Man, Lifting Shadows Off A Dream, etc - aren't even proper Prog. The only reason Another Day is so good is the sax solo. If you want saxophones in Prog, Supertramp are your band.

I don't mind Genesis. I think Invisible Touch is a pretty decent album. The stuff from the period when Peter Gabriel dressed as a giant daffodil, however, just doesn't appeal to me. As for Rush... I had to play Tom Sawyer in a pub-covers band once and thought it was alright. I downloaded their discography at one point but literally couldn't be bothered listening through it all because so little of it wasn't crap.

Really, though, Prog is a fucking sty. I mean, it spawned Focus. That's how bad Prog is.

And that's supposed to be good?
