Venom formed as Oberon, then Guilotine after Jeff, Clive (bassist/vocalist) and Tony met at a Priest concert in 1979. Priest played Newcastle City Hall on Oct 25th, so for arguments sake they got together in one of their bedroom's in say early November and within six months Clive was out, Conrad in, and they'd recorded the "Demon" demo at Impulse Studios. These three tracks were much slower than the versions on the "WTH" album, which came out in Jan 1981. At some point between "Demon" and "WTH" Venom recorded a fast version of "Angel Dust" that appeared on the "Lead Weight" compilation on Neat, this was the first ever thrash song! Atomkraft did form in 1979 but didn't record until 1983. A mention is made of a two track demo called "Demon" on Metal Archives, this may or may not have existed, but I think it may be a mix up with the Venom recording of the same name.
All in all, Venom remain the pioneers of thrash!
First ever UK thrash band??? + UK thrash history?

Average primitive thrash/speed metal. Their debut came out in 1985, had it been 1982 they would have been legends!

Of course I didn't forget Venom (thought it was too obvious!), but I was wondering if there was any sort of missing link UK band, other than 'slaught (despite their punk-tinged sound; they were still fast and noisy as hell), that may have been overlooked, but not their influence...
Also, I'm quite interested in what the 'scene' was like then (especially in the Bristol area), like what sort of venues they played and what sort of following there was... I dunno, I just thought a little history lesson wouldn't go amiss, especially with the whole crazyness that's bound to happen soon. Would be cool to see how the originals did it!!!
