Talking about Onlsaught in the other thread made me wonder, who was the first band in the UK to be playing proper thrash??
Onlsaught's first demo was 1983, was there anyone else making proper thrash that early??
It also seems like most of the thrash bands that were going between 84 and 86 started as punk/crust bands
First ever UK thrash band??? + UK thrash history?

they always kick ass, all however many times I've seen em!!!!
Back on the topic of the past, there were loads of bands around that only released demos and stuff, for example - Warhammer, the band with Shane Embury on drums, and one of the first 'death metal' bands from over here!!!

It depends how you define "proper thrash". If you mean the first UK band to start copying Metallica et al, then Onslaught, although the early stuff was very Discharge, they didn't make the crossover to thrash until their 1985 debut, a switch that was fully realised in 1986 with The Force.
I take it you are discounting Venom for some unknown reason? Lumped in with the NWOBHM but obviously something else altogether, if their Welcome To Hell and Black Metal albums weren't thrash, what were they? The Yanks listened to Venom, cleaned it up a little and sold it back to us.
So the answer is Venom.

I stand corrected my learned friend, didn't realise that they formed so late and were nipped in their buds so early its sad really... would you agree that Motorhead, Queens 'Stone cold crazy' and Black sabbath's 'Paranoid' influenced the genre also?!

time for recognize the origin
I never think about this question before....
seems Venom and Onslaught are the very first,
but is there anyone else?
thrashing around in 1981 - 83?
a little bit off topic,
I have no problem to figure out who's the first thrash band from HK,
because HK only have one thrash metal band.....

Go on Harris, admit you'd forgotten about Venom.

I think you will find atomkraft formed in 1979.There first demo was very thrash but the first album was more power metal. Not sure when venom formed but i know outside of the uk overkill were going from around the same time.
