In my opinion MA are in a different league to the bulk of that list in sheer originality, songwriting and unique musicianship. It depends what you like, and to be fair I haven't checked out bands like Monstrosity, but I imagine their newer albums are the sort of chuggy American death metal that I really can't be bothered with.

I agree that Morbid Angel are one of the more unique detah metal bands, but come on - Heretic was gant. Heres hoping that with David Vincent back the new album will be along the lines of Domination or Altars of Madness.

Why are we even talking about modern releases? I don't care what Heretic was like - most people think modern Exodus is shite, but that's not a major reason not to vote for them in a list of Bay Area Thrashers...

Death are the best. End of.

Obituary: I don't mind Slowly We Rot but I don't love it. I don't know, the songs just don't feel that cohesive. Cause of Death though is absolutely fantastic. I also heard good things about the Tardy Boys so I was thinking of checking that out.

Cannibal Corpse have never floated my boat. Heard a lot of their stuff. I just don't see the appeal. Riffs are ok but nothing special and the vocals don't wow me either.

Autopsy definitely deserve greater recognition. Not just in death metal but in all horrible, sludgy bands as well. Really like their stuff, probably equal to Obituary.

Atheist: I have only heard Piece of Time but I like it quite a lot. I want to check out their later album as I hear they fuck with stuff and make it crazy. Can hear things on POT but it is pretty standard (as in basic not average) DM.

MA I have disgracefully neglected. This will be rectified. The others I haven't really checked out but Morbid ANgel definitely come first.

Interesting titbit about Massacre's Promise album (which is a piece of shit but worth listening to for novelty value). I also didn't know that Allan West was in the band before he joined Xecutioner (don't remember this being mentioned in the "choosing death" book):

Massacre were formed in 1983 by Allen West and Bill Andrews and soon joined by Kam Lee and Rick Rozz. They disbanded and re-united again several times. After one disbandment, Rick, Terry and Bill joined Death. The band released their debut album From Beyond in 1991 followed by an EP a year later (featuring Cronos of Venom). After which the band split up again. Rozz reformed the band in 1993 and released a new album Promise in 1996. Lee stated this in an interview, "However while in the studio i realized that this material was shit and so during the post production i quit and walked out! This was recorded in 1994, but it took Rick and Earache two more years to finish it because i quit! Do not let them fool you... all the vocals on this album are not me!! I never finished all the vocal tracks!" Promise was very badly received.
