Try a DS-1 or an SD-1. I think that's how the Boss terminology works - a Distortion or Super Overdrive should suit your needs.

Afriend of mine used to use a sonic maximizer (whatever that is) with a 5150. sounded brutal.

A lesson that took me a while to learn is that distortion pedals seldom sound good on there own on your clean setting. They can be good for beefing up your crunch setting but then you'd best have a noise gate to cut back the hiss and extra treble you get from them. I don't get the chance to crank my amp too often but my Engl sounds fine on its own for practising purposes.

Has anyone ever tried those PODxt live pedalboard things. I've got a PODxt (the kidney bean) which works wicked for computer recording, but i've only seen one band use them live and it didn't sound as good as I thought it should.
