I imagine that the drums and vocals are hard to do at home. I presume you can just plug a guitar in to a 'magic box' that connects to a computer and record it pretty much anywhere that's reasonably quiet.
Would it be feasible to record the drums and vocals at a studio but do the guitars and mixing at home?
So how much does it cost to record a demo/album?

Yeah you could do that but it'd still have to be mixed and mastered twice, meaning yet more money.

But you need an M-Box to run ProTools, so how do the illegal versions work?

They don't as far as I know. Not cheap to get either (£1200?)

Christ almighty, no they're not that much. The proper big boys HD version is about a billion pounds, but you can get different versions of the Pro Tools LE with the M-Box. I've got the M-Box Mini, which I think cost around £200, maybe a bit more. Then you can get one thats a bit bigger, and then the Factory Pro one, I think it goes up to around £400-£500. You can also get it with the 002 big box thing, which is probably a bit more, but I don't know how much. And then there's that big boy HD rig, which is really for proper good studios.

I have to say, I'm still not sure how this all works but I do understand the level of my ignorance now! Thanks for all the comments.
