Postby thrashtash on Sat Mar 01, 2008 12:16 pm

I needed your opinions dudes to judge my bands new material (feb 2008).

Im sick of showing my bands songs to people who know fuck all about thrash or metal so iv come to a place where thrash is appreciated.

Some prime ripping off of Phil Anselmo's voice there. Some tasty geetars though.

I've the same thing to someone about a week ago on here, but when you're after feedback, don't just snub your nose at what someone has to say if they're not a 'true thrash fan'. If you've come on here expecting everyone to kiss your arse just because they're already heavily into thrash then... you've thought correctly, because that's what happens here.

10/10.

Funny you should mention the vocals. I thought the guy was alright, clearly competent. However, the biggest problem was that he didn't seem to fit the music that well. Can definitely hear the Anselmoist style in that voice which doesn't seem to work with your Bay Area-ish stylings. Maybe you need to move your sound closer to Exhorder :).

I thought 'The Devil Drove me On' was okay but it was definitely missing something. 'Quick to Hate' was better.

And Martin, I think people listen with a critical ear on here. They just don't manage your wonderfully harsh frankness.

This is what I think to it:

It's already been said, but the vocals have that Phil Anselmo thing going on, which I absolutely hate. This is just a personal thing, some people are into it, but I think if you're a British band it's a cardinal sin do some gay American metal rip-off vocal. It just seems really cheesy and uninspired to me. But, that's not necessarily something that's gonna turn people off your band because not everyone is that fussy.

After listening to this first song 'The Devil Drove Them On', I would say the riffs need something extra... I can't point out exactly what yet, I'm trying to avoid saying your riffs are generic though, because that would just be lazy of me. I think that odd time-signature riff at the beginning has potential if you worked on it harder - at the moment it sounds a little awkward. Your drummer sounds pretty tidy, but it would be nice to hear some different fills from him. The soloing on this song is pretty competent.

Overall, I'd say this song suffers from poor structuring more than anything. The riffs aren't shit or anything, it just seems like they've been thrown together a bit hap-hazardly. For instance, I have no idea what that clean guitar part is doing there, it's absolutely pointless.

I'll not bother talking about the other songs in detail, because the points I've made are quite general. If all that seemed a bit harsh, don't take it in the sense of me trying to piss you off, I'm just being as blatantly honest as I can be.

Yeah, don't get me wrong, I'm not acting all high and mighty. There's plenty of people on here who have really good things to say when it comes to critiquing music, I'm more just making a point that a lot of people will come here with the attitude that thrash fans will appreciate their music much more than your average music fan, which I think is very naive.

Gee.... I don't know about the rest of you guys, but lately the only things that truly motivate me are erections and bowel movements.

i detest the anselmo vocals but i like the spiralling riffs which remind me of early Coroner. I didnt think the clean guitar part was particularly effective but it was a good sign that you're aiming to do something a bit differently.

Yes we did gig at the purple turtle, it was our second worst gig ever but we enjoyed it anyway.

Thanks for the comments dudes, keep them comin,

I agree with every word that all you guys have said!

we are making changes already to improve our band, we may even have found a new singer to replace me!

just for your information I rarely listen to phil anselmo, im much more influenced by kyle thomas but it dosent make a diffrence anyway, the same critisicm applies.

please keep the comments commin there are 89 views but only 11 replys so far, everyones opinion is valid to us.

The second song is definately better than the first, and the overall sound is slightly metal-core. Not that im saying you shouldnt be, cuz it is what you are aiming for then good for you. The thing that does worry me, and it is the same with a lot of new bands, is that you almost seem to be asking what direction you should go in to be popular. You should have opened this thread with the words this is what we sound like i hope you like us. we will be improving our sound as we practice and so forth, so keep checking us out.

If i was in a band id do what was right for ME and if people liked it then grest if they didnt, dont listen. simple!!!!
