Immortal
Emperor
Watain.

Would be my choice.

Based purely on music, not taking all the political / religious bollocks into consideration, then this is my top 5 in order

Burzum (guitar stuff, not electronic)
Adorior
Rotting Christ (earlier style, not like they are now!!)
Filii Nigrantium Infernalium
Bathory (first 4 lps)

Although, as always in these lists, there are many others that i could add, especially Sabbat (japan), mayhem on the debut lp, Dark Throne (1st 3 black metal albums), abruptum, Beherit, svartsyn, Summoning, abigor etc etc etc etc

Loads of other contenders obviously, but a lot of bands don't sustain extremely high quality for very long, ie Peste Noire, Watain, etc.

Svartsyn are indeed excellent also, and under praised.

Unless i'd be allowed to count Bal-Sagoth which I spose I wouldn't. But yeah, 1349 are an ace band.

No-one has said Cradle Of Filth yet either :P

Black metal is for puffs.

Having said that, I don't mind some of Darkthrone's stuff, especially their recent direction.

The only Black metal band I have much of a liking for is Immortal, but I guess it's because I haven't really delved into the sea of grim and kvltness enough or some shit.
