The perfect album

Postby jonny_boy34 on Sun Jun 22, 2008 12:49 am

Is there such a thing? Yes there definitely is. Post what you consider to be a perfect album, and that'll be lovely to discuss. Albums that you could listen to at any time no matter how many times you've already heard them and still feel amazing every time. And we might even discover some great new music through it. Here are some of my choices, some will be predictable to those who know me, and others may not.

Opeth - Watershed (obviously)
Opeth - Still Life
Comus - First Utterance
Khan - Space Shanty (definitely check this album out, it's some of the best music ever written)
Iron Maiden - Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son
Tool - Lateralus
Judas Priest - Sad Wings Of Destiny
Black Sabbath - Master Of Reality
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven
King Crimson - Red

With each and every single one of these albums, I can listen to it from start to finish and not want to skip a single track. Every album has had an impact on me in some way, whether it's changing the way I think about music or production, or just a more simple (but equally powerful) emotional impact. Not always instantly though, mind you - some of these albums (eg. Opeth's Still Life, Comus, Sabbath, Khan, GY!BE... in fact, most of them) have taken a while to grow on me before I can fully comprehend their goodness. But now, when I listen to any of these albums, I want to rape your mum.

Oasis - (What's the Story) Morning Glory

It's literally too good. It has everything.

I prefer Definitely Maybe. It has more balls. Bring It On Down is one of the best songs Oasis ever wrote. But it has Shakermaker on it, which annoys me. Stupid song. Morning Glory is pretty amazing though too. That album was probably more influential on my musical journey of life actually than Definitely maybe was, so it's definitely worth mentioning indeed.

I love the second half of the album but there are those silly tracks that last no time at all. She's Electric was a pointless rehash of Married With Children too.

As for albums that I struggle to find fault with:

Boston - Boston
Daft Punk - Discovery
Def Leppard - Hysteria
Duran Duran - Rio
Exodus - Bonded By Blood
Fleetwood Mac - Tango In the Night
Guns n' Roses - Use Your Illusion II
Iron Maiden - Somewhere In Time
Kiss - Dressed To Kill
Kreator - Coma of Souls
Metal Church - The Dark
Pearl Jam - Ten
Radiohead - The Bends
R.E.M. - Automatic For the People
Sheryl Crow - Globe Sessions
The Cult - Love
The Eagles - On the Border
Van Halen - F.U.C.K.
W.A.S.P. - The Crimson Idol
Whitesnake - 1987

Personally perfect albums? Well, I struggle to declare because I always decide later that they have their flaws. But...right now:

DKs - Plastic Surgery Disasters
Slayer - Reign In Blood
Killing Joke - Killing Joke
Danzig - II
Integrity - Those who Fear Tomorrow
Rudimentary Peni - Death Church
Bad Brains - Rock for Light
Vio-Lence - Eternal Nightmare
Mastodon - Remission
At the Gates - Slaughter of the Soul
Entombed - Wolverein Blues and Clandestine
Poison Idea - Feel the Darkness
Black Sabbath - Masters and S/T
Napalm Death - Enemies of the Music Business
Faith no More - Angel Dust
Exodus - Bonded by Blood
Dark Angel - Darkness Descends

Blatantly others but the above are all albums that as soon as I put on they vindicate themselves and they require no skipping.

Also worth noting is King Crimson's debut, In The Court Of The Crimson King. Almost perfect, though for me the second half of Moonchild goes on for too long, and doesn't go anywhere. Can't have a bit of prog without a bit of self indulgence I suppose, but this one's a little bit unnecessary. Still quite lovely though.

The Offspring - Self Title
The Offspring - Ignition
The Offspring - Ixnay On The Hombre
The Offspring - Rise And Fall, Rage And Grace
(Americana, Conspiricy Of One and Splinter all have one track I don't like, which is a shame because they're just as good/better than the ones I class perfect)
Sum41 - Half Hour Of Power
Sum41 - Does This Look Infected?
Sum41 - Chuck
Toto - IV
Toto - Self Title
Foo Fighters - Skin And Bones
Top Gun - OST
Dream Theater - Images And Words
Dream Theater - Train Of Thought?
Dream Theater - Scenes From A Memory (best album of all time)
Dream Theater - Falling Into Infinity
Dream Theater - When Dream And Day Unite
Dream Theater - Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulance
(Then the same as The Offspring, the other albums have one track I don't like. Well, I do like them, just one vocal part which lasts like thirty seconds ruins it)
Liquid Tension Experiment - 1
Liquid Tension Experiment - 2
Nickelback - Curb
Nickelback - The State
Nickelback - Silver Side Up
Nickelback - The Long Road
Nickelback - All The Right Reasons
Angra - Aurora Consurgens
Dream Evil - Dragonslayer
John Petrucci - Suspended Animation
Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden
Iron Maiden - Killers
Iron Maiden - Number Of The Beast
Iron Maiden - Piece Of Mind
Iron Maiden - Powerslave
Iron Maiden - Somewhere In Time
Iron Maiden - Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son
Black Sabbath - Heaven And Hell
Black Sabbath - Mob Rules
Dio - Holy Diver
Rainbow - Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow
Rainbow - Rising
Rainbow - Long Live Rock 'n' Roll
Vio-Lence - Eternal Nightmare
Testament - Legacy
Exodus - Bonded By Blood
Metal Church - The Dark

There's more but...this is getting a bit long.

No. Absolutely no. I can accept all other opinions because this is totally subjective but fucking Nickleback? Sorry but their music literally makes me squirm. I thought it was just 'How you Remind Me' or whatever it was but then I heard a song they did about domestic violence (with the cringingly terrible, totally bone-headed line of 'She's just a wooomaaan!' :wall: ) and I was squirming again! I have to leave shops when 'Rockstar' comes on because I feel so uncomfortable.

I HATE Knickleback...

Black Sabbath - Master, s/t and Vol. 4
Comus - First Utterance
Kingy Crim - In The Court of The Crimson King (Jon has a good point about the second bit of moonchild, although it's acceptable due to every other song on the album being amazing.)
Camel - The Snow Goose, Mirage
Caravan - In The Land Of Grey and Pink
Leddy Z - LZ II
Iron Maiden - s/t and Number of
Nick Drake - Pink Moon
Metallica - MoP
Forbidden - Forbidden Evil
Judas Priest - Sad wings
Pink Floyd - Dark Side and WYWH
Megadeth - Rust In Peace
Opeth - MAYH and Watershed (but basically all of them)
Witchcraft - The Alchemist

You see, I find 'Moonchild's' indulgence far more forgivable than 'Epitaph'. Don't get me wrong, I still think SWOD is a first class, grade A album but I regularly skip said track and find it unnecessary and a little daft. 'Moonchild' never gets skipped. I missed out loads of prog from my list but yes muchly to Crimson (Red and In the Court are probably equal in stature), Wish you Were Here, Aqualung, First Utterance and numerous others.
