Lack of promotion

Postby Daaaave!! on Thu Mar 13, 2008 12:54 pm

Afew underground type gigs ive been to recently at Bar Monsta, Purple Turtle etc hardly anyone has attended, a lot less than there might have been a year and a bit ago. Ive been searching around and upcoming gigs dont seem to be promoted too well...Even Turisas that are playing at the Electric Ballroom tonight... i wouldnt have said that was promoted too great...Not that i like Turisas, but im pretty sure it wont sell out.

*This is my first post so be nice =)*

You do have a fair point to be honest. But then again i am solely reliant on the internet for my notification of gigs and ticket master seems to think i am interested in indie and electro for some reason.
Gee.... I don't know about the rest of you guys, but lately the only things that truly motivate me are erections and bowel movements.

A lot of people seem to take live music for granted, and are only interested in the bigger bands. It's a shame really because its the underground bands that keep the scene moving.

I totally agree about a lot of people being uninterested in smaller underground bands, but I also think that promoters are pretty lazy when it comes to non-internet flyering nowdays. It doesnt take long to whip round a few sites and Myspace sticking up details of a show but the art of flyering and postering is on the wane, presumably because it takes much longer and has comparatively little success... but i think this is part of the decline in numbers at shows. The internet by its very nature encourages a sort of disposable feel to things that you dont get with a proper printed flyer... its the same with zines vs. webzines and Lps / Cds vs MP3s, just to a lesser extent.
I'm guilty myself as I hate physically flyering shows, I need to do more of it.

QFT.

There is nothing more depressing then flyering at a major gig and watching some dick who does'nt have a clue about how the music scene works and thinks these bands spring out of nowhere to play venues like the Academy.... screw up my flyer that I cut out 20 mins earlier, that I got my mom (bless her) to photocopy for me at work.

Its all down to word of mouth these days. I mean we are lucky and I can almost garentee the same faces coming to our gigs every month (I should know I stick on the door and know the regulars), but in all honesty I would prefer some new faces rather then old faces over and over again (not that im not extremely greatful) and sadly in Birmingham we suffer from the green eyed monster from some other people and they wont go because there friends are'nt.

Oh yeah if this kicks off its my opinion in general not Bills or Lukes.

My problem is that I live in Kent and struggle to get to gigs. My weekends are normally so hectic that lower-profile gigs don't get a look in. By this token, it does mean that I don't really get to judge the promotion in the London scene. However, I know from Metal Brew experience that our efforts often don't always feel effective and this can bugger up morale and motivation...

Word of mouth in forums like this seem good. Someone on this forum brings a friend to a gig, they join the forum and go to the next gig and bring a friend. And the cycle continues.

There's an unseen fortune under their belts
Are golden temples a symbol of God's way
This horde of wealth is a sickening display"

It's bloody amazing. If I could get it decent enough size, I'd save up to either have it sprayed on my tank or my helmet.
