Difficulty In Songwriting
I was just wondering if you write songs at your ability level or aim higher or lower? I have written a few riffs that are quite tricky for me and am having to practice hard just to play them. Anyone else?

When I were still in a Thrash band I used to write stuff that was slightly too difficult to play at first and then practise the riffs to fuck.

Yeah, same here, some of the riffs pez writes kill me to play!
When I wrote the main riffs in Too Late (it's actually quite a long while ago now..) I couldn't play them properly, at all Then we sped it up a bit more

All you need to do is twat a few power chords at super speed and scream about cunts. All the other stuff is just fancy bollocks.

that sounds scarily like STD!
i find it hard to write a riff that i can't play, i.e. better than my abilities. sometimes i will write a riff that i can play slowly but i need to practise a bit before playing it at the speed i want. i wish i had the songwriting prowess to think of riffs that were so great i couldn;t even play! i think thats pretty impressive.

yeah man, I get these cool riffs in my head sometimes, but I can never ever play them how they sound in my head
it's possible to write hard riffs just by jamming out and then after a while if you start playing faster and mess around with funny finger positions and shapes some cool stuff eventually comes out!!!

My song writing ability is near non-existent. This is mainly due to my terrible guitar skills. But still I can never seem to form a decent rhythm.
Down to practice and understanding i guess.

Gee.... I don't know about the rest of you guys, but lately the only things that truly motivate me are erections and bowel movements.

For me riffs by Craven Idol (black thrash) pretty much reflect how much ive been practicing my technique recently.
The old school influenced Style of music we play isnt exactly too technical besides of my solos which are completly nuts and are really hard to dublicate without missing some notes.
I play at least 2-3 hours a day so there definately is lots of improvement in my technique comparing to the first demo.
However, our style of music really doesnt require very complex riffs in general. It more about sitting there and figuring out some killer progressions and making the song flow.
For my other band, Scythian, however, for which I just play bass and do vocals, however write no material at all for, the main guitarist writes riffs that are way too hard for himself to play....then again, the music is quite complex and extremely fast in general.
I have a feeling there was like no point here...hmm, oh well...
