I was reading some things on Blabberbollocks, and apparently out of the six tracks shown to the press, this was rated the worst. Which is encouraging.

Agreed. Did anyone else think this? I expect better from Kirk Hammet, sloppy as fuck.

Sounds like a fairly typical Kirk Hammett solo to me. To be fair, he's not got much to solo over.

I think Kirk is quite overrated. He's good of course, but his solos are never that inventive, he just uses lots of wah-wah to make them sound cool.

He's not good enough to do what Skolnick does and solo over next to nothing. It's quite hard to come up with anything memorable over:

On second listen it didn't seem that sloppy but it was very unremarkable. The song was even less than unremarkable. If this was any other band I'd just go 'nothing to interest me' but because it's Metallica my initial thoughts are it's quite good because in contrast to previous efforts its pleasing improvement but then I think about how it actually sounds and I get pissed off that firstly, I am making allowances for fucking Metallica and, secondly, that I still give a shit at all.

That's what annoys me about Metallica, I think people let them off for poor quality just because they're Metallica. If a band releases shit material: they're shit. That's all there is to it.

i agree, as far as the bay area bands, kirk is one of my least fave soloists. I mean, listen to the soloing on the first forbidden, violence, testament or some of the laaz rockitt albums. It pisses over later hammett stuff.
Personally, i much prefer his soloing style on kill em all and ride the lightning to anything that came after.

Metallica are so out of touch with where they came from I don't think they even realise that they're shit. I mean, if you ask someone in a band if they think their new album is shit, they'll probably go on the defensive but eventually agree with you. I don't think Metallica are capable of that because they're all stoned on antidepressants because they don't like each other.
