It's metal that is the speed of thrash, has riffs like thrash, vocal like thrash...but you go..."it doesn't really sound that thrash"

Therefore, speed metal.

I thought Speed Metal was more like NWOBHM but sped up. The band names are quite a bit gayer in some cases too: see Agent Steel, Abattoir and Exciter. I've heard people call Megadeth Speed Metal because they often moved away from the Thrash formula of:

0 0000 0 0000 0 0000 0 0000

I wouldn't say that makes them Speed Metal as much as it does less generic than most of their contemporaries.

I'd say bands like Agent Steel or Razor and the German lot like Rage, early Helloween, Running Wild.. a lot of Power Metal bands used to play it, but then sort of dropped the speed.

It's hard to define as an genre though.

I don't really need to cover this much further but at Billy's special I thought I'd add my bit. Crossover is basically as Tom and Iain said. I suppose it really became a noticeable musical 'movement' during the 80s in New York. Black Flag and Bad Brains were key to its formulation. Agnostic Front, Carnivore, SOD, Cro-Mags, Crumbsuckers and others were at the forefront of the sound. In terms of recommendations, some of my faves are:

Corrosion of Conformity - Animosity (messy, bad production but a brutal hardcore quality NOTHING like modern day COC. Intervention and Prayer are classics)
Crumbsuckers - Life of Dreams (Guys who went on to be in Pro-Pain. Cool solos, top quality riffs and some wildly compiled songs. The Longest War is one of my faves.)
Cro-Mags - The Age of Quarrel (Now available with their second album 'Best Wishes' on one disc - also well worth owning. Hardcore breakdown bits mixed with proper metal riffing. Basically, the origin of metalcore but much better than anything modern day).
Raw Power - Screams from the Gutter (Basically punk with melodic, almost Maidenesque influences from Italy - absolute chaos but absolutely fantastic).
DRI - Dealin' with It. (Again, the punk/hardcore sound is more prominent but it's catchy, fast and violent. One of my favourite albums full stop).

Others of equal merit (or, perhaps, slightly less): SOD, The Accused, Poison Idea, Agnostic Front, Cryptic Slaughter, Ludichrist, Broken Bones, Suicidal Tendencies, Heresy, Sacrilege.
Modern day: Municipal Waste, SSS, Adrenicide, Lifeless, Cross Examination, Chewin Druids, Venomous Concept.

Crossover's wicked. I like punk. I like hardcore. I like thrash.

By the by, I haven't posted in ages because my laptop is broken. I'm on my bro's and was inspired to type. I hope mine gets fixed so I can post like a big slag.

There's an unseen fortune under their belts
Are golden temples a symbol of God's way

The Crumbsuckers' "Beast On My Back" is one of my favourite crossover albums. They also toured England with Onslaught and Slammer , which was a good night out. I saw 'em in Bradford.

As people have mentioned, other crossover bands include SOD, MOD, DRI, Agnostic Front, COC etc. Some of the crossover bands actually came under the "New York Hard Core" cloak at the time, much as Acid Reign proclaimed themselves as "United Kingdom Apple Core".
