Shall we ban cars then? Sickly perfume? Body odour? Smelly feet? Farting?

The better way would have been to continue what they were doing before and let the proprietor of a bar or pub decide whether or not to allow smoking on the premises. I remember people basically suggesting that you should have the right to drink in a smoke-free environment. I think that's total bollocks. You could say you also have the right to enjoy your pint whilst not getting annoyed by a drunk at the bar too.
I totally disagree. Being annoyed by someone has no clear detrimental impact on health. Passive smoking patently does, and you couldn't even escape it unless you totally left the venue and its atmosphere.
If it was down to landlords to choose, most would OBVIOUSLY not ban it. Those in favour of the ban tended to either tolerate it or not go to such places in the first place (so they wouldn't be losing existing custom), whereas those against it were a clear chunk of regular pub-goers.
I don't see how you can possibly argue that one doesn't have a right to not passively inhale someone else's carcinogenic fumes in a public place.
Now now, there's no proof that second-hand smoke is detrimental to one's health. You've been taken in by the liberal media again, haven't you James? Besides, it's a bit rich to object to passive smoking whilst consuming alcohol.
'BOO HOO! I want to binge drink in smoke-free surroundings!'
See, that's the thing, a number of places in Glasgow did ban smoking voluntarily prior to the smoking ban kicking in. I don't see why non-smoking pubs wouldn't be able to survive alongside pubs in which you could still smoke. Considering it's the landlords that have to enfore the ban rather than some regulatory body, it's also a bit of a kick in the knickers for them.

The pub next door to me doesn't seem to be suffering; it's fucking packed there on a Friday night. What amuses me is people stand puffing smoke in the doorway, surely that's illegal? Not that I care...

It's just obvious.

Re: Drugs. Yes... Drugs.
I was being facetious you fools!
I'm sure there are health risks but, to be honest, I'm not all that bothered about my health seeing as a few of my organs are pretty much write-offs anyway. I'm sure I'll change my tune when I'm coughing up blood and calling for a priest, despite being a Protestant.
Discussions should never be taken seriously on UK Thrash even if they're about seemingly serious issues.

It's all about the effect on OTHER peoples' health. There's no such thing as "passive drinking" - my liver isn't going to get fucked up if someone next to me is drinking themselves silly.
But yes, this is UK Thrash after all.

Millions times more genius than banning fags.

To be honest, I see the responsibility as lying with the would-be passive smoker. If you don't want to inhale someone else's fumes, don't go to a pub where people smoke. I just don't agree that the government should have to ban things when situations such as those associated with passive smoking are completely avoidable.

That's ridiculous. A pub primarily encourages the sale of alcohol, not tobacco. Why should drinker's have to go out of their way to avoid smoking in bars / clubs / pubs??

Yes, primarily, but it wasn't that long ago that you could buy cigarettes from behind the bar, let alone from vending machines in pubs. I see what you mean but I don't see pubs as somewhere that is purely linked with drinking.
