I think it quite sensible about the animal testing ideas on convicts of vile crimes. I am for capitol punishment. My views would have been different a few years ago, but to be honest I don't think it works. I think people have breached their human rights when they commit such atrocities. And as pointed out the jails are over crowded, and we don't want to destroy more countryside by building more of them. I don't know if it puts people off committing murder but it clears them out. I'd rather the taxpayers money went on helping improve things rather than being spent on these people.

Regarding labour camps or forced labour, I'd rather that was for more petty crimes really, just so long as people aren't hideously abused. I also think it may be an idea to bring back the stocks, maybe shove the chavs in there and pelt them with tomatoes!

perhaps we should think about ways of preventing crime rather than imaginative ways of punishing criminals.

Prison is the answer for murderers etc., but they need to be made more brutal. A basic bread and water diet, locked in a cell 23.5 hours a day, you and your cellmates shit in a bucket that is emptied once a day, that kind of thing. No TV, no PS3s, no namby-pamby bollocks, just let them rot in their (and others) shit.

If you take a life or ruin a life through child abuse etc. you are no longer human and therefore have no human rights.

I'm not arguing about the moral aspects but the political consequences. Is it really worth jeapordising our position in international politics because of our lust for punishing criminals?

I agree, once people commit such crimes they have breached their human rights because they have breached someone else's 'human rights'. What about the rights of the victim? People like this should be made to feel small.

Also boovidge, do you honestly think it would "jeopardise our position in international politics"? - I can't see what you are basing that on at all, it sounds like a bit of an unfounded scare tactic.
