AL ATKINS (ex-JUDAS PRIEST)

Postby blacktears on Tue May 26, 2009 11:53 pm

Of course, for those of you that picked up the "Victim of Changes" CD, many years back, will know, Al Atkins is the founder and original vocalist of JUDAS PRIEST. He formed the band in the late 60s and left in 1973. None of the current members were in the band when he formed them. Ian Hill & Glen Tipton joined in the early 70s, followed by KK Downing.

It's nice to see he's still doing his thing and is still Metal (he still has a decent voice too) The recent recordings on the link are pretty decent, I think. I wish he would leave "Victim of Changes" alone though, as he's recorded it about 3 times now. He should stick to the version he wrote - "Whiskey Woman".

I'm afraid I've never been able to take him seriously, because he seems to have pedalled the Priest connection for the last 30 odd years - you'd think if he was a credible creative force in his own right he wouldn't need to. I'm not saying his original stuff isn't decent because I haven't really checked it out, but it just comes across as pretty desperate when he has album titles like 'Demon Deceiver' and cover art like this:

HMMM, look familiar?

But maybe I'm being too harsh on him, as I'm sure there was some alright stuff on his '90s albums.

I think that's a common theme among ex Maiden and Priest singers...

I ain't heard Victim of Changes or any of his other stuff, but this doesn't sound too bad, his voice is quite good and shit..

I hear what you're saying, James, though I think that kind of blatant promotion has been more in recent times. He has been recording and releasing music since he left Priest in '73.

As Thrashduck says, Paul Dianno likes to hark on his Maiden past, to this day. He used to frequent a pub round the corner from the LAII, where people would buy him pints for some Maiden chat.

Then there is Dave Evans, the original AC/DC vocalist, who is still doing his thing.

What's important is if they are still producing decent music. That's the bottom line.
