Re: Why play metal?
Basically, metal offers something that a lot of other genres don't. A little something called variety.

The only thing with less variety than metal is punk!

Re: Why play metal?
Yeah, it is a varied genre but from a playing standpoint it's not that different.
Gee.... I don't know about the rest of you guys, but lately the only things that truly motivate me are erections and bowel movements.
Thank the Police coming straight from the underground...

Re: Why play metal?
Well I just couple metal with power metal, thrash, death, grind etc. (even though a few of those are more punk than anything).
Unless you go with say, jazz or something. But seriously, jazz? No thanks...

As if you say no thanks to Jazz. Buy a bike, and get the fuck on it.

I just play metal when I am watched so I seem cool. I play country when I'm alone

Coroner are the first band that came to mind.
I do't mind a little jazz influence, but I can't stand jazz. HUSH ZURAB!!

Re: Why play metal?
Jazz ftw...
When I started playing guitar I would pretty much exclusively play metal, probably because it was my music of choice and I think it's very accessible for someone who has the basics of their instrument down. Although after a while it got boring and I have to say I 1000% find it more interesting and 'fun' playing Jazz, Funk and proper Blues etc...

Re: Why play metal?
People who learn metal and only metal tend to write shite bland songs (ala stone sour / Disturbed yawn fodder), learning other shit should be just as important to spice it up.
The Founding 3 of metal....
Sabbath > Blues
Zep > Folk
Purple > Pr0g
