Yeh I'm still trying to figure that one out myself..

But more to the point.. has Doom always been this big? Or am I right in thinking it's either grown or made a big of a resurgance(sp)??

Doom has never been, and never will be, big.

It's your own perception with the amount of bands mentioned that is telling you that, but that is only because it is easier to find out about new bands these days than it was 20 years ago.

It annoys me when people say Black Sabbath is Doom, there Heavy Metal they just had a huge influence on more modern doom bands sound with two albums.

Sabbath was out way before doom was established as a genre.

Well, just because they were around before the phrase, Doom Metal, was coined doesn't mean they are not Doom Metal. They set the template.

Back in those days it was called "Downer Rock". Doom sounds a lot better description than that!

To backtrack on my previous post - Sabbath is the only band that could be coined "Big" in this sense.

Just get really really really really (can't stress that enough) stoned and listen to electric wizard, that did it for me.

It made my mind go a bit wrong in a very special way. I've since (mostly) given up the greenery and can appreciate the genre as a whole and as with every type of metal it's madly diverse.
Gee.... I don't know about the rest of you guys, but lately the only things that truly motivate me are erections and bowel movements.

I swear there hasn't been so much Doom around for at least a few years.

I CANT STAND THIS SLOW MUSIC GAARRHGGGEGLG.

I also apologise that this thread isn't about the game Doom; which incidentally is awesome.

Unlike the genre. Bah.

I disagree with that being the best version ever, but that song is the second song i ever learnt on guitar.

An example:

I'd say, despite the obvious bias, that I am a Dead Existence fan. However, most of the bands I've seen when I've gone to see them play, are just genuinely uninteresting. 5 notes in a song. Half an hour long. etc etc.

So yeh. Maybe I'll just sit in Jon and/or Jamie's car for a bit. Ha ha

Well, those bands are a type of Doom but they are certainly an acquired taste.

I think something like Lunar Womb by Obsessed can't really offend anyone and is just a rocking collection of tunes. Likewise, Sleep's Holy Mountain, I think can be enjoyed by most. I think it's Electric Wizard territory where things get a little... sketchy. Basically, if you think anything with Wino in is shit, you are a bit of a bellend. So, consider that, Faraz.

 Awesome...so happy i got to see Wino with Vitus at Hellfest!!! Met Dave as well and he was so high i wonder if he remembered he had just played a set when i said to him about it haha

Yeah doom is more or less my favourite genre of music, i go off on binges with other genres but i always come back to it. I think it seems to be one of the most genuine genres as well in regards to playing with feeling and overall attitudes of bands (aisde from some of the elitism that encircles it). The genre ranges from the really slow droney stuff right up to the more doom/sabbath influence upbeat rocking stuff. Also give it time and find the right band, Bill didn't like it the first time i showed him some stuff now its one of his favourite genres as well.

In regards to sabbath they are pretty much proto-doom/heavy metal much like Iggy and the stooges are proto-punk...so not actually of that genre but laid the foundations pretty solidly.
