why do you hate tabs?

I think they're good if you want to learn something quickly and exactly how it's played!! And good for reference aswell!

Jimmy Bryant stuff is very fuckin hard to figure out (for me!), and there's nowhere to learn any of it!

why would u want to play anything exactly like its played? when u figure out things by ear you play it your own way which makes you develop yerself as a guitarist and have your own playing style rather than copying the thousands of guitarists out there.

If you just were to (for example) learn EVERYTHING by a guitarist, yes you would probably end uip sounding exactly the same as that guitarist... but how is learning a song how the guitarist (who wrote it) plays it gonna hinder your own development?! Surely you will already have your own style and anything else you learn can only contribute positively to your own playing? I mean, if you only figure it out and know kinda how to play it, you could have a bad way of playing it and that would then probably do more damage to your playing because then you haven't learnt the best way of playing something (hence using tabs for reference  )

Also, have you never learnt anything from a guitar magazine or book?

I like to learn how a songs properly played, but I normally end up playing it the same, but with different hand positions.

I hate tabs because they are generally wrong, and also guitar pro is a load of shit.

I'm just guilty of being far too reliant on them, having a good musical ear obvs improves playing anyway as i'll be able to take the songs from my mind and actually create them as opposed to going... erm yeah... what.

Moderation, as Saul Bolton is fond of saying.

yah everyone has their own opinion, yeah well u start by figuring out things badly in the beginning, the better u get the better u learn things by ear which generally improves yer ear as a musician, i didnt say that learning songs by tab hinders a guitarists development, i am saying by figuring out songs and playing them in your own way means u develop more of an original style of your own.

I have generally found tabs to be incorrect too - the only one 100% correct was the Necrophagist tab book of Epitaph as it was written by Mohammed Suicmez! That was well solid though.

I have always found learning by ear to be more beneficial as a musician than learning parrot fashion from a book. It's nothing to do with developing your playing style, but more to do with understanding the music itself and the way it all works.

^^ Indeed

Yeah, lots of wrong shit unless it's been copied from a book or magazine, or unless someone actually gives a shit and decides to make a correct tab!

And yeah, GP is wank... can't even keep up with slightly fast runs and what's up with the timings fucking up sometimes and that stupid tempo change crap! Another thing - the RSE sounds crap, I'd rather use Power Tab and have midi sounds!
