Where to find thrash metal in London[new in town!]

Postby alevar on Fri Sep 21, 2012 10:39 am

Hi guys,

I'm an Italian thrasher just moved to London for uni.

I was looking forward a forum like this one, so I registered and now I have a couple of questions for you.

1) What are the best CD/record shops in London, where I can find thrash stuff? I suppose the best ones are in camden, but I'd really like to know where precisely.

2) Are there any kind of website in which I can find dates of thrash gigs in London?

3)Which are the best clubs/pub/bars to check for thrash/thrascore gigs in town?

thank you guys!

I decided to do my infrequent perusal of the site and I have a(nother) free day so I will do you the good service of a brief summary.

1) To be honest, best places for thrash CDs? I don't really know. All Ages Records in Camden (http://www.allagesrecords.com/) is actually more a punk store but it branches out fairly broadly, including some thrash. Sister Ray (http://www.sisterray.co.uk/) basically do everything and their metal selection is odd. However, sometimes you might find a treat. Besides that bigger name bands are probably most easily bought at some HMV somewhere - the one down Oxford Street is pretty massive so you might find it has the best selection.

2) I'd find appropriate links on facebook, for dates. Also, as quiet as this forum is these days, it's well worth looking at the gigs section. Someone will normally post a gig and then it will either get ignored or receive sarcastic comments but the gigs go on regardless.

3) Well the go to place WAS The Unicorn (http://www.facebook.com/theunicorncamden) but it's not what it was. Perhaps keep an eye, as they had Abbaden play with Terrathorn last week. Must have been 10 people there (whatever happened to the SCENE, man?). Now The Black Heart is worth a look (http://www.ourblackheart.com/), so is the Grosvenor (http://www.facebook.com/thegrosvenorsw9?fref=ts) but, unlike The Unicorn, these venues charge. Still, their shows are often worth a trip. Bigger bands play bigger venues - The Garage (http://venues.meanfiddler.com/the-garage/home), for example, has Voivod playing this Sunday (7th) and the O2 Academy, also in Islington, (http://www.o2academyislington.co.uk/) has Overkill on the same night.

I'm so good!

For record shops I recommend Flashback Records in Islington, I was there last week and they've got a great selection. All Ages Records is good if you're into punk and it's many sub genres, it's metal section is very small though, just one box on the floor.

Flashback is a great little shop. Was tempted to mention it myself. Lots of wicked vinyl especially. It is all second hand CDs though, so you get a weird mix and few new releases.

Have you not been in the basement? it's just used vinyl down there.

Monkey Tennis?
Gee.... I don't know about the rest of you guys, but lately the only things that truly motivate me are erections and bowel movements.

Thank the Police coming straight from the underground...
