As Ian said, NWOBHM is both a sound an a time-period. To be NWOBHM in my eyes, you have to have been from that time and have a certain sound, which Motorhead certainly don't have.

Motorhead are not NWOBHM to my ears. What about Tank? I haven't been able to pick up any of their CDs due to them being apparently non-existent but what I have heard sounds awesome.

Although 1983 is certainly the start of thrash, I wouldn't call it the start of the classic era. The only two major releases that year were Kill em All and Show No Mercy (which wasn't released until the December anyway). And unless I'm missing any, The only other two noteworthy releases would be the ones by Suicidal Tendencies and Exciter.
1984 had more significant releases so it would be reasonable to say that year was more of the begninning, but for me, the real start of the classic era of thrash was 1985. The list of classic albums released that year is just stupid.

So why aren't Waysted NWOBHM? They were British, sounded like Def Leppard, and formed in 1982, the year in which you state is still within the scope of classic era.

Okay if it makes you feel better, Metallica aren't a thrash band at all, and Waysted are NWOBHM.

NWOBHM, with a few exceptions, was about bands from the back of beyond saving their pennies and putting out a limited 7" which now sells for a fortune and then vanishing in the puff of a cheap smoke bomb. It was back to basics stuff with a punk DIY attitude.

Some of the bands went on to fame and fortune but for every Maiden and Leppard there were tens of bands who were only well known down their local pub, played a handful of gigs and no one would've remember had that non-thrash band taken an interest in making money, sorry, covering songs from the era.

Oh and as you say Waysted sound like Def Leppard, a band who were a NWOBHM band in the beginning but chased the $$$ and became more hard rock, just like Waysted.

Priest preceded NWOBHM by a good few years. The early priest material is right for the time, being more 70s rock than metal. They May have been a british heavy metal band in 1978, that didnt make them NWOBHM though. Same with Motorhead. You cant really say just because they were british, and played HM, they were NWOBHM, for fks sake, you'll be wanting to call whitesnake NWOBHM next

Waysted were formed by Pete Way,who had been playing bass in UFO since the early 70's,after his project with "Fast" Eddie Clarke "Fastway" (see what they did there) went tits up,so as an old stager's (even back then) vanity project I personally wouldn't class them as NWOBHM.Although I did see them support Maiden,possibly on the World Slavery Tour,but that was a long time ago!
The album they did with Danny Vaughn on vocals was good though.

Can just add that Motorhead are not a NWOBHM band please?
