Probably an entertainer third.
If you asked me who I consider a genius, I wouldn't say... Slayer... Exodus... I'd say ARCTIC MONKEYS, KASABIAN, OASIS.
...Sessions.

Getting the fractures sustained from a bus hilariously crashing down upon your pelvis sounds like a challenge.

We shouldn't laugh.

Although image and stage show should always be secondary to music, stage presence is hugely important and let's face it, long hair in metal just fits. Whether you attribute that to an 'image' is up to you.
I think looking the part really helps a live band. Other than live shows, I couldn't care less what a band looks like, and even then, there are exceptions. Rammstein don't look that metal, although they aren't exactly playing Thrash.
The whole Metallica thing came out of being anti-glam, not against the metal image.

If it's a band dressed in pink studded belts, flowery baseball boots, sideshade hairdo's & girls t-shirts then i'm not gonna listen to them. That might be stopping me from listening to some good tunes but fuck them. if they're gonna dress like birds then i'm not having any of it!
Unless of course they are birds in which case said dress may be allowed but even then it's pushing it a bit far.....
other than that i'd say it's alright for a band to dress however they want!!

I think Metallica really were more just influenced by their NWOBHM heroes, surely glam wasn't really very established in 82/83? Or am I wrong here? Totally agree with the rest of your post though.
James - you are a total wimp - blue jeans are the way! As long as they aren't stonewashed though...

Only if they look really battered and not at all baggy. I wasn't really talking about the denim thrash look anyway, but more about classic heavy metal.

Personality is much more important than image. Bruce Dickinson has short hair now and wears rubbish clothes, but that doesn't stop him from still being the best frontman this earth has ever seen. Sure, he had his own image back in the day, but the way he is now proves that didn't really matter because his on stage personality is so powerful and glorious.

So Bruce doesn't dress up as 19th century redcoat and wave a huge flag about?

But it depends on the music style - I'm thinking more of a classic heavy metal outfit (pardon the pun), which I think would just look like a pub covers band if they got on to the stage dressed in jeans and trainers - it would just reinforce an amateurish part-timer image.
I'd hate to be in a band with you and your Nazi attitude to style.
Seriously though, I think Nazi uniforms would be great...
