I noticed on this thread that someone mentioned the famous "Jesus is a Cunt" tshirt and some kid getting arrested for wearing it. Well it's just been banned in New Zealand.

It's easy to think that you shouldn't wear something that offends other people BUT the freedom to offend is part of freedom of expression. Now the blasphemy laws have finally been removed from the statute books we are more free but the anti terrorism laws 'could' be used against anyone expressing an opinion that 'could' incite hatred. The original French Atheists were constantly arrested as they offended the French catholic church. Sade spent a good period of his life in jail for offending the sensibilities of the French with his works. As much as the religious get to offend the non religious, homosexuals, women, children and animal rights atheists should get to offend them with equal impunity.

One of the good things about this constitution-less land is that the laws define what you can't do leaving everything else free (as opposed to constitutions which define your rights and restrict you to that along with endless arguments about the interpretation of said constitution).

In some sense, my problem with the T-shirt isn't that it's blasphemous; I'm not particularly religious so I don't really care what anyone says about Jesus. I'd say this is true of most people. I just see wearing a T-shirt that says, 'Jesus is a cunt' to be an attempt to offend people who are religious which, to be fair, is not difficult in the slightest. If you're setting out to purposefully offend people, I believe that you should go for a slightly more resilient target than the God Squad. I mean, let's face it, what do deeply religious people not get upset at?

And I would say we have a constitution, it's just not a formal document. We're bound by various domestic and international laws which state what is and is not illegal.

They are an easy target but you've got to admit they are resilient. If we say that religion was useful up until about 500 years ago that's 500 years of fucking up humanity. That's pretty resilient in my book :) You're right about the tshirt, it's offensive for offensiveness sake which does make it difficult to defend. I'd still say anyone has a right to wear it in social situations though.

A bit of both to be honest. If I were at the pub, had had a few and saw someone that couldn't beat me up that was wearing it, I'd definitely heckle him. I just don't see what would possess someone to wear that. You do have to draw the line somewhere, though. I'm almost certain you would not get away with wearing a T-shirt depicting Princess Diana fellating Nelson Mandela, even though everyone has the Right To Wear Silly T-shirts.

From what I understand these days being "British" means the following:

Believing: THE *insert scapegoat minority* ARE TAKING OUR JOBS.
Blame the government for you not being albe to raise your kids.
Never getting bored of binge drinking.
Belive that muslim = terrorist, while at the same time believing all the conspiracy theories.
Think that because "they" are over here they should respect our "culture" then when you go on holiday completely disregard the local culture.
Think that BRITIAN IS LOOSING ITS IDENTITY! because a mosque is opened yet any other form of religious building seems to be acceptable.
    Just being pretty much Xenophobic.

But looking back over that "list" I'm sure the majority of them could be used to define other nationalities.

I wouldn't consider myself "British" at all, like James if I was asked I'd say I was English simply because I was born here not because its "what I am". I'm not patriotic in the slightest and I don't feel the need to "get behind" the country on a sport I don't give a shit about just because its the cool thing to do at the time (when did the majority of people give a fuck about Cricket untill England won the ashes again?)
