I like living here, and I'm also right in the centre like James.
Then again, I wanted to go somewhere busy where there are lots of things to do so that I didn't have to fall into the routine of going to the same 1/2 places every weekend...so London suits that quite well. It's great that I can walk to most of the things I'd need.

The urban environment isn't a problem, I'd have to be an ultra n00b not to realise that London is urban. The fact of the matter is-can I realistically live there as a student or will I have to abstain from alchohol and shit to get by?

Personally, i would hate living in london. I know it as both my dads parents and my stepdads family lived in london and i used to visit it a lot. It is way too urban for me as i grew up on a farm, and even in a small(ish) town like burton, i long to live back in the countryside again. Yes there are lots of gigs, but that alone isnt reason to want to pay the extortionate price of living in london. There is plenty to do in birmingham too which is only 1/2 an hour away from here, but unfortunately, not enough good gigs!!!
The one and only really good thing that london had to offer was Shades, and after that closed, my trips were much less frequent.

I'm a country boy myself, I couldn't hack London.

Likewise I don't think I could ever live on a farm. Bloody hell.

Well, I've lived there before so I know I can hack it.

BTW do people seriously think I'm basing my whole decision around the gigs? What the fuck. There's obviously loads taken into consideration but considered we're on a metal website and I'm a metalhead it's just a good thing to keep in mind.

Ditto.

I find living in Glasgow hard enough sometimes what with the constant sound of sirens and having to put up with arseholes on the street. Mind you, at least I get mobile reception here. Out in Fife it's non-existent.

You still have to be spat on by someone who can't speak English every 5 yards though.

In short, London - a great place to go to once in a while. I would not be able to hack living there though.

In the words of Alan Partridge..

"London, which I spell S-H-I-T-H-O-L-E.. Shit'ole! Go for the day, visit Madam Tussauds... get the hell out."

I sometimes wish I lived in London coz I happen to live in the arse-end of nowhere (aka Aberystwyth, Wales) at university, but then I take a look at my rent (£52 a week including water) and the average price of a pint of ale (£2.25) and I suddenly change my mind!

I don't have first-hand experience of living in London, I'm originally from a town on the London commuter route - both parents have done the commute for most of their lives.

The main thing that hit me when I stayed on James' sofa one night was the sheer price difference of stuff. Fish and chips (albeit a monster bit of fish) for a fiver - I could get the same for £3.50 here. Also, the drink prices are stupidly high. £3.40 for a pint of Guinness, around £3 for ale.

Aye. I can get a pint of quality lager for £1.80 in my village. It's insane that places like this still exist, but awesome.

I've been to Aberystwyth, and Wales many a time and have always quite liked the country. Compared to the English and Irish, I have a lot of time for the Welsh too.
