^^ exactly!!!
what if a string breaks and you need to change it fast, but nobody can do it for you? a bit fucked then aren't ya
also you get the action nice, adjust the neck if it looks bent at all, etc etc etc... it's very handy to know what you're doing with a guitar!!!

A mate of mine back in school actually said that once, and completely seriously, he'd only been playing about 6 months too. Needless to say the last time I saw him he liked drum and bass and seemed like a total cock.
Sounds a lot like me.

I can barely play my guitar. I should probably start playing it more. I don't even have a pick. That;s my dedication.

i gave you a pick last night, you fucking retard.
yes its certainly good to know that sort of stuff, because it helps whe things break or when you want to make your guitar better to play etc... but talking about it is very boring indeed. its like computer geeks who discuss motherboards etc... gay!

I do. I love playing guitar but when it comes to talking about the different woods, the newest trems, the quickest fretboards, I can't stand it!
I can talk about guitars to some extent, for examle:
"That guitar looks cool! I wonder what it is?"
Or:
"Yes, this is an Ibanez, its quite good, yes about 350 quid"
But thats it really, other than that, I just like to play music upon them, anyone else?
Yeah, the typical "mr fucking lead guitarist" who knows everything about everything on guitars. I hate those fuckers!!
I've been playing for 7 years, and I only found out what notes the strings were a few months back. The E A D G B E shit. I only found out because I started working in a music school too!!!
One time, the EX-guitarist (cunt) in our band came over to me while I was jamming some riffs, and he said, "You've got really bad posture when you play, move your hand down a bit". FUCK OFF. I almost ripped his jaw off. Fucking lead guitarists.
It's all well and good being a lead guitarist, but if you actually admit it like, "hey I'm the lead guitarist in this band", then you're the biggest cunt ever!!

Yeah I think there is a difference between having a grasp of the basic maintainence of your instrument, and being a total muso-nerd about the whole thing.
I do think basic understanding of any instrument's workings is important (even though my knowledge pretty much stops at changing a string, fiddling with the tension springs, etc.) - one of my first guitar teachers at school never ever went through with me how to get a good sound out of an amp!
It seems shocking looking back, that he didn't run through the basic settings of an amp. I'm still quite aprehensive when faced with some scary looking multi-knob amp I'm not used to.
I just want to play riffs 'like'.

Exactly!
If you don't set a Floyd just right, it won't work as well and I like using Floyds. The same goes with intonation - what's the point in even playing if you're going to go out of tune every time you move five frets up the guitar?

That's not the point of the thread - general maintainence is clearly a good thing to know, but rather people who want to endlessly discuss the ins and outs of boring technical bollocks; that is just annoying.
That was probably written really badly, but I'm too tired to care.
