Has anyone ever had a sleep paralysis episode? In may case I wake up but I can't move at all, like I'm paralysed. I get really paranoid and try to wake up properly, then I wake up with my heart racing. I hate it when that happens

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_paralysis

Ah, it's actually pretty common. "the paralysis state may be accompanied by terrifying hallucinations (hypnopompic or hypnagogic) and an acute sense of danger". That used to happen quite a lot to me. I think the most recent one I had was giant penguins pecking at me :eyes: But I don't get them anymore

not really a dream but still sleep related.

have you ever layed over one of your arms to the point of not being able to move it out from under you once you realise your laying on it.
then if you sit up straight, you still cant move the arm at all.its like pins and needles x100000.almost like being paralysed/losing an arm.and takes several minutes to get the feeling back.
also the next day your shoulder/chest may ache.

the amount of injuries that can happen from doing nothing is astonishing.

Yeah, and it's amazing how heavy the arm is when there are no muscles working - it shows how much our muscles are constantly working.

Yeah I think everyone gets that, just as you're drifting off. I once heard it was an evolutionary legacy from when monkeys thought they were about to fall out of trees... but that is most probably utter bollocks.

Last night I had the longest series of dream sequences I've had for ages... possibley because I was hammered.. but... from what I remember...

First off, I walked from one place to another in a very short space of time and went into the train station. I seemed to need to get somewhere quickly, so I ran to get a train, but used the stairs because the escalators were going really fast - when I got to the bottom, I turned round and noticed aload of people falling off it and being all twisted on the ground.. I then got on a train, and noticed a train full of small chavs, who as the train pulled away, were beating up my mate..

But I continued on the train, and I was drawn to an attractive American girl, who told me she'd just arrived in the country that day. I shot the shit a bit, but my mate seemed to have magically reappeared at the table, and clearly had his tanks on my lawn. But anyway, the train stopped and we got off, and it appeared that we were right on the coast, with an awesome view of all the cliffs and shit. Aload of other people I vaguely know started walking down towards the coast but we found ourselves in a really shitty area, where people were playing poker in the streets and shouting abuse at us. Eventually, we found some little house... anyway.. flash forward a bit.. and it was dark. One of the people I vaguely knew ran in the house and told us that one of the other people had been stabbed in the area. So blates we wanted to get out of the area, so I suggested we phoned a taxi.. or the police.. but the person was like "THERE'S NOT ENOUGH TIMEEEE!!"... so we got ready to leg it out of the area, when a man appeared.. I screamed.. and then he told us he was the landlord and he could give us a lift out of there. But I woke up then. Rubbish.

One story I've heard is that it's your soul re-entering your body (I don't where it would've gone off to), but that's obviously a lie. It probably is just quite simply your brain thinking you've fallen over when really you're lying down.

can get it from dreams too like if your running and fall over! it's just a natural reflex to falling... in your subconcious it feels like you've tripped or fallen and i guess the reflex part of your brain isn't shut off when you sleep so you naturally react to the feeling of falling!

Steve, I've had that sleep paralysis thing before, Isn't that something to do with something your body releases into your bloodstream when you fall alsleep which technically paralyses you so you dont flail around madly in your sleep? When I had it there was no hallucinations/half dreams, i was totally stone cold awake but i opened my eyes and went to move, it was kinda like having a dead arm but a dead body lol.. I just thought "ah well i can't move, go back to sleep", woke up half hour later and all was groovy!

I get dead arms some times, trick is to fall asleep with your arms not under your body, like if ur facing down or up, have your arms up or to the side (even if you're lying on your hands), and if you're sleeping on your side, make sure your bottom arm is going out at 90 degrees from your body, that way none of the nerves or blood vessels are being compressed!

one of my mates actually smacked himself in the face with a dead arm before, like rolled over in the morning and it just flailed into his face

I had some MENTAL dreams the other night, can't remember them except the feelings (if that makes sense) and a few random shreds of bits! I kept waking up from 6am onwards and just goin back to sleep for more dreamy goodness :P

Thanks Einstein!

I got that 'unable to wake up' feeling once, it was pretty horrible. I had fallen asleep leaning on the desk at work, then I sort of woke up in my head but couldn't raise myself off the table! It was worse because I felt like someone was in the room standing behind me, but I couldn't snap out of it. Finally I made myself wake up by taking a huge gasp of air, and I sat up with heart pounding. Worst thing was I then went back to sleep, and it happened a second time, and only another big gasp of air woke me up. Quite scary.

hahaha i know it's obvious but I do it quite a lot man! just being so tired and lying down then wake up with a dead arm! not so good, I used to sleep on my arms and they wouldnt go dead when I was younger (ie -not as heavy) so the habit is kinda still there a bit!
